"GRANNY BALL”
IS NOT JUST FOR GRANNIES!
Granny Ball may have been conceived by some super grandmothers who love sports and basketball, but its appeal has reached greater proportions, drawing the attention and desire for participation by hundreds of 50 “plus” women, both married and single!
That’s why the Chicago
area needs “a league of its own” and, more auditions will be held - TBA Now any woman, with age “50-plus” credentials, who wants to play a gentile game of basketball, and can provide doctor’s OK, could become part of the first teams---in the state of Illinois. Six popular knowledgeable judges will oversee these auditions, including Granny Ball founder, Barbara McPherson of Lansing Iowa.
The Granny Basketball League was created to provide: 1. Fun, competitive exercise for women over the age of fifty 2. An avenue for charitable giving 3. Wholesome, nostalgic, humorous entertainment for spectators of all ages 4. Salutations for spirited women 5. An attitude adjustment for those unaware of the capabilities of older adults 6. It is 6 on 6 Basketball played with very strict and gentle guidelines “What makes this program very rewarding ” says founder Barbara McPherson, “is because it’s a gentle game which allows mature women to enjoy a worthwhile physical recreation activity, with a competitive edge, and share this sport with their families.” Grandchildren and other family members (even those with physical impairments )often serve as cheerleaders, and are very supportive of their sporty mom, grand moms, great grand moms, peers and pals. (since this program is for women single and married!) Colorful 1920’s style ensembles are what most existing teams have embraced, but each own new team can create its own title and decorative details to accent unique showmanship and, distinguish themselves. Although Granny Ball concentrates on the 6 on 6 game, some of the players also compete in the Senior Olympics, in 3 on 3 games following the guidelines of the Senior Olympics. However, for many – the gracious Granny Ball concept appeals because the rules are more sensitive and prohibit any major physical contact. Silver Lining Expo, an organization which develops a variety of programs for the “silver” (over 50) generations, will coordinate this exciting national project. According to President Barbara Lee Cohen, “these games will be further enhanced by lots of interactive entertainment. It’s also hoped we will interest many companies, associations, and related community groups in sponsoring or helping teams in various areas where programs are already active, or will be established. Right now, there are fourteen (14) teams in Iowa, two (2) in Mississippi, one (1) in Michigan with hundreds of other individuals anxious to join or start programs in their areas.”
